Opel Astra Set to Stun

The all-new Astra promises better driving dynamics and practicality than the previous model

By Hadi Soedarsono

ONE of the most important cars that will be launched at the Singapore Motorshow 2004 is the all-new Opel Astra. It is one of the German marque’s top-selling models, positioned to compete with the Volkswagen Golf and Mercedes-Benz A-Class in the premium hatchback segment.

Only the five-door hatchback will be available for the time being, with two engine choices of a 1.6-litre and a turbocharged 2.0-litre hot hatch, pumping out 105bhp and 200bhp respectively. The former uses the semi-automatic Easytronic also known as MTA (Manual Transmission Automatic), while the latter has a six-speed manual transmission.

Physically, the fifth-generation Astra is bigger than its predecessor in all directions, promising generous cabin and boot space. Opel claims the build quality has vastly improved with a higher grade of dashboard materials than before.

The chassis has been designed to provide a fine balance between driving dynamics and ride comfort, with clever technological highlights like the adaptive suspension system IDSPlus (Interactive Driving System) and CDC (Continuous Damping Control).

The CDC allows the dampers to react in real time to variations in the road surface or driving style and adjust themselves automatically to the prevailing conditions. The IDSPlus system gives the driver a “Sport” option that regulates the damping characteristics as well as the response of the accelerator pedal and steering.

One other highlight is the Twinport system that the 1.6-litre engine features. According to Opel, the Twinport system is designed to enhance fuel efficiency and produce cleaner emissions than most of its competitors. Prices have yet to be announced, but expect it to start around $100,000 with COE.

CarBuyer will be the first to bring you a local test drive of the Opel Astra in the next issue out November 10th. Or you can take a first-hand look at the Opel Astra at Booth 603 of The Singapore Motorshow 2004 from November 11th to 21st where you can also check out Opel’s other new
car with a folding hard top, the Tigra.
