Audi Gets A for Effort

ENGINE The 2.0-litre 20 valve in-line four cylinder engine is reasonably smooth but not particularly quiet or torquey

INTERIOR Interior is much the same as that of the old car, which means that it’s excellent. Build quality is the best

REAR The rear treatment is now neater, scalloped tail lamp clusters and smoother bumpers make for a tauter look

At $143,000 with COE, the base model does undercut its German rivals by a significant amount. For the money you get an enviable level of fit and finish, and a decent drive.

You also get an excellent integrated stereo with built-in CD changer, automatic climate control, and a very comprehensive trip computer too.

If you’re willing to pay for more oomph, you could stretch your budget all the way to a heady $185,000 with COE if you opt for the 2.0-litre turbo model (which shares its engine with the highly-acclaimed VW Golf GTI).

Or you could opt for a slightly less stratospheric $160,000, which is for the variant with the VW Group’s ubiquitous 1.8-litre turbo engine.
