Audi A3 Sportback 2.0T FSI DSG
September 10, 2005

Too Haute to Handle?

As The Rolling Stones famously sang, “You can’t always get what you want”, much of the same also seems to apply to the A3. While the cabin’s build quality is up to Audi’s usual high standards, my inner boy-racer couldn’t help but wish for a flat-bottomed steering wheel and a set of drilled alloy pedals, just to drive home the point of the ‘Sport’ part of this A3’s ‘Sportback’ moniker. Since we’re at it, a set of Xenon headlamps wouldn’t go amiss on a $145,000 car as well.

The one thing that Audi did get right in this A3, though, is the inclusion of Alcantara upholstery. Not only is this mock-suede fabric more characterful than leather, it’s also more functional. Alcantara maintains a Velcro-like grip on the seat of your pants, especially useful for occupants who are of smaller build, no sliding about in your seat if the driver gets overly enthusiastic on his favourite set of corners.
