A4 gets six

Good looks, a nice comfortable cabin, a powerful engine, and insane levels of grip thanks to four-wheel drive. What’s there not to like?
Very smooth power delivery, an all-round great drive
The electronic suspension dampers make the car feel a little numb when compared to its smaller engined sibling, the 1.8T

Four-wheel drive and a big V6 gives the new Audi A4 a heart of fire

By Lionel Kong in Olbia, Italy

A BIG CAR is only big if the rest of the cars around it are small. Here is Singapore, where running costs are high and the roads are narrow, cars with engine capacities of less than two litres are considered the norm. Go above that, and you have yourself a ‘big’ car.

But drop yourself in Germany, America or Australia and things change dramatically. Long, open roads and immense distances mean that the cars bought by the masses there tend to be pretty big, by our standards at least. In those countries, any car with less than 2.0-litres in engine capacity is generally considered a small car and medium cars are usually classed as those with engine capacities of between 2.5 to 3.5-litres.

Which is where a car like the 3.2-litre Audi A4 comes in. With its 265bhp V6 engine, it’s just the kind of car that you would use for blasting down the German Autobahn. The most powerful of the A4 range (not counting the upcoming RS4 sedan) gets Audi’s Quattro four-wheel drive system plus the Audi drive select; a customisable program that lets you set up the dampers, steering and throttle mapping to suit your driving style and road conditions.
