Despite a 20bhp power deficit the 525i is slightly quicker than the XF and its in-line six cylinder engine still offers unmatched smoothness. Keen drivers and passengers alike will enjoy this car, although the low-speed ride is stiffer than the Jag’s.

Recently facelifted, the GS300 now has sharper steering and adaptive suspension damping, but its handling still isn’t as fluid as its European rivals. You can’t argue with the fantastic build quality or long list of standard equipment though.
