The Astra is not an easy car to pigeon-hole. It has the ride characteristics of a sporty sedan even though its power output doesn’t allow it to be classified as one. It has plenty of back row space and a boot that will swallow an incredible amount of luggage but has a slightly cramped front row, but then there’s that German badge that continues to hold a certain allure.

Stiff competition is most likely to come from the revitalised Volkswagen brand here, though the only car that can compete with the Opel Astra on price as well as size is the basic 1.6-litre VW Jetta.
