The Jetta’s handsome exterior makes it easy to overlook the fact that the basic version of the car is being powered by a rather basic 8-valve, 102bhp engine. It’s not a car for spirited driving, but there’s solid build quality beneath the skin.

Renault Megane 1.6 4dr (A) $79,000 with COE
The Megane has a smaller, less powerful engine, but it’s a much more relaxed car to drive with light steering and pedal action. It loses out little to the Astra, except where luggage space is concerned.
