Chevrolet Aveo5 1.4 (A)
July 10, 2008

A new spring in the Chevy step

For something that has passed its fifth birthday, the Aveo5 still feels surprisingly sprightly. It turns into corners without fuss and little body roll. The steering is not overly assisted and well weighted for a car in this segment. There is also a good amount of feel coming from the tiller.

Ride quality is acceptable given the firmness of the suspension. Bumps and large potholes are smothered away admirably, but the car feels jittery over smaller, continuous rough surfaces. It’s still a fair trade-off between nippy handling and ride comfort given the short wheelbase of the car though.

The 1.4-litre 16-valve 94bhp engine from the outgoing car soldiers on in the revised Aveo5. It is a torquey unit and deals well with the cut and thrust of urban driving. However, this engine does not like to be hustled and responds vocally when revved hard. It is most relaxed when pottering around at cruising speeds where there is little noise intrusion into the cabin.

The four-speed automatic transmission is also the same as before and it is smooth and quite eager to downshift.
