The 1.8-litre engine has plenty of low-down urge, but there’s little point in revving it hard since it gets buzzy as the tachometer needle nears the redline. We’re approaching an era in which four-speed transmissions are becoming outdated, but the Wish’s gearbox does at least provide smooth, well-timed shifts. The handling could never be described as sporty, but it offers no nasty surprises, so the Toyota is a safe, predictable machine that offers an easy, effort-free driving experience. The ride quality on our test car was overly firm, however, making it feel as if the tyres had been inflated with too much air. Handily, the Aero Tourer is equipped with a screen and reverse camera, which takes all the guesswork out of parking it.
