Chrysler Grand Voyager Touring (A)
July 24, 2008

It’s all about the voyage, not the destination

A large 3.8-litre V6 engine gets to do pulling duties in the Grand Voyager. It isn’t designed for speed, but has plenty of torque to get the car rolling along with minimal fuss. There are no pretensions about trying to make the Grand Voyager even remotely sporty because you really can’t get something the size of a small elephant to run like a cheetah.

Which is all good because this has allowed the car to focus on the more important things inside a good MPV.

There’s a magic carpet ride quality to the whole setup, with the soft, compliant suspension system soaking up all manner of bumps big and small.

What we don’t recommend though, is to take corners too fast. There’s a serious amount of body roll once the car is chucked into turns too fast, and which it never feels totally unbalanced the front wheels will progressively slide into understeer.

The six-speed automatic gearbox is a welcome addition, and it appears to be tuned to shift early to return the best fuel economy possible. The car will coast along for quite awhile even with your foot off the accelerator, so with some careful planning and driving techniques it’s quite possible to make the big engine drink less, which is always helpful.
