Peugeot 308 1.6 Turbo (A)
July 24, 2008

Moving in the right direction

Even though the 308 is based on the outgoing 307, it does not inherit much of its predecessor’s ride and handling characteristics. The new car has a much firmer ride and corners well with little body roll. The only quibble is that while the steering is well weighted it does not impart much feedback.

The 308 is powered by a part German heart borne out of PSA Peugeot Citroën’s collaboration with BMW. The 1.6-litre engine equipped with variable valve timing and a turbocharger can also be found in the Mini Cooper S and 207 GTi but this unit has a higher maximum output in the latter two at 175bhp.

A gem of an engine, it is strong and free revving producing 140bhp at 5,800 rpm. There is no discernable turbo lag with the maximum torque of 240Nm accessible at 1,400 rpm. The car hurtles forward with much ease and also makes an addictive waste gate whistle when easing off the throttle.

It is a disappointment then that the four-speed transmission it is paired with is not up to the mark. Though smooth shifting, it is slow to react when you want it to and there is also a tendency for it hunt for the right gear.
