Audi has answered the criticisms of its older models’ lack of agility with the razor-sharp R8 supercar and the A5 adds substance to that reply. Corner entry is eager, though with a slight hint of understeer, and the plush steering gives reams of feedback all the way through. The body remains flat upon turn in although more violent inputs show the car’s weight (1610kg unladen). Firmer S-line sports suspension lowered by 10mm also comes standard on local models. Audi’s Quattro system along with 255/35 19-inch tyres provide tons of grip, probably more than you’ll ever need this side of a race track. As found in the top of the line A4 sedan, the 3,197cc 24 valve V6 engine gives 265bhp at 6500rpm, which is enough shove to propel the car to 100km/h in a quick 6.1 seconds. As expected of an Audi, the power delivery is smooth, refined and quiet. Only if you gun it hard above 3000rpm does a lovely subdued growl issue from the engine. Torque is also exceptional, with a good fat vein of 330Nm delivered from 3000-5000rpm. However, the A5’s best party trick is the Audi Drive Select system which enables you to switch between three programs: Comfort, Auto and Dynamic. Selecting comfort will give the smoothest suspension, engine/gearbox and steering ratio if you’re in a languid mood. Auto adapts to your driving style on the fly, while Sport is self-explanatory. You can also program different levels for each for unparalleled flexibility, so if you want quick steering but an economy drive that can be done too.
