Audi A5 3.2 (A)
July 24, 2008

Straight A Coupe

Audi is well known for it’s great interiors and the A5 is no exception. Our test car had a black interior dominated by the usual run of leather, metal and plastic. However it’s an indicator of the quality of their interiors that every last plastic button or stalk in modern Audi’s feel substantial in both execution and operation, and that goes for the non-plastic items too.

Audi’s newest Multi Media Interface (MMI) system provides everything you could ever want in a car from videos to Bluetooth phone connections and a great GPS system, all packaged in a (relatively) easy to use and slick-looking interface. It does suffer from a plethora of buttons though, and some functions are difficult to access on the fly, like the air conditioning speed.

With a wheelbase of 2.7 metres, the A5 doesn’t pull the oft-found ‘big on road presence but tiny on the inside’ GT trick, as even the rear seats are comfy and spacious for normal- sized people. The sloping roofline, low road noise along with the dark, leathery interior provide a nice cocooning effect which can’t be matched by its rivals. That sloping roof does have a downside however, as a shortage of headroom evinces itself both in front and the back.
