Works like a charm
Mini shows its wild side. The JCW is brash and aggressive, and all the more fun for it
Uprated engine delivers sensational performance, razor-sharp handling, surprisingly refined on the highway
Likely to be pricey, tiny rear seats and boot. But there’s always the (uglier) Clubman The 211bhp John Cooper Works is the fastest production Mini yet

Here’s an easy recipe for a great hot hatchback. Take a fast, compact car with its wheels at each corner – a Mini Cooper S is perfect. Add a bigger turbocharger for higher boost and some reinforced engine parts, plus Brembo brakes so it stops as well as it goes.
This is, in a nutshell, what the new Mini John Cooper Works is all about. It has other goodies too, like a strengthened six-speed manual gearbox and electronic limited-slip differential (LSD), enough to ensure that the only way to get a JCW is straight from the factory. These mods simply can’t be bolted onto an existing Cooper S.
The John Cooper Works brand name now belongs to the BMW Group, which will apply it on market high-performance Minis. Just like how the M branding is used for the sportiest BMWs, in other words.
The JCW is the first result of this strategy. It can be had as a standard hatchback or slightly longer Clubman; either way you get the new 1.6-litre turbo engine with a wild 211bhp, up from the Cooper S’ 175bhp.
Given how image plays such a big part of the Mini’s appeal, it’s a bit disappointing that the JCW doesn’t look more different from its donor car. But there’s no doubt about its intentions once the engine is fired up.
The freer-flowing exhaust crackles and pops at its twin 85mm pipes, just like a genuine race car’s. Push the ‘Sport’ button in front of the gear lever and maximum turbo boost is delivered earlier in the rev range, resulting in awesome pace. The JCW gets to 100km/h from a standstill in just 6.5 seconds, and feels even quicker than that.
It’s partly because torque steer – an urgent tugging on the steering wheel – is a constant companion whenever you accelerate hard. That’s the result of putting so much power to the front wheels. Mini engineers say they know about this, but dialling it out would have meant dulling the steering response so it’s been left in. Can’t argue with that.
Even the engine feels like it’s been tuned up to 11, with its beautifully crisp power delivery maintained all the way to the redline. Just flex your right foot and the car surges forward with an enthusiasm you’ll never tire of.
In tight corners the electronic LSD brakes the lightly loaded inside front wheel, so more power can be sent to the opposite wheel with more grip. Most of the time it’s impossible to tell that it is working at all, which is exactly the way it should be.
All you’re aware of is that the JCW is fabulously nimble like any other Mini, and it stays so neutral in corners you wonder if it carves out grooves on the tarmac wherever it goes. The new brakes are fantastic, too.
The JCW is likely to command a substantial premium over the $127,800 with COE Cooper S when it arrives in Singapore, but in return you get one of the most exciting hot hatchbacks ever built. Everything about it just Works.
