Faster than the eye can C

Verdict:
The wonderfully-complete C 63 AMG might well be all the car anyone would ever need
It has stonking pace, heavenly soundtrack, five-seat practicality and a sorted chassis
Drive it like it demands and you’ll weep at the petrol bills

What happens when you cram a highly-tuned 6.2-litre engine into the bonnet of Mercedes-Benz’s smallest sedan? As the C 63 AMG shows, fireworks!

AS TWISTED AS this might sound, the $358,888 with COE Mercedes-Benz C 63 AMG is a new way to think of value for money.

To the uninitiated, it won’t seem like you’d be getting a lot for the money. Seemingly, the C 63 is just a C-Class with a lot of bodykitting, big brakes and fancy wheels. Might as well put the money into an S-Class, which offers so much more car for the cash, right?

But peep under the bonnet and there it is, the single object that alone justifies the princely sum required to buy a C 63 AMG: a hand-built (and signed) V8 engine big enough to give any tax collector from the LTA a stiffy.

More specifically, a mammoth 6.2-litre engine lurks under the C 63’s bonnet, and it’s no agricultural lump yanked from one of Mercedes-Benz’s lorries. Instead it’s a recent AMG design, with all the modernity and racing pedigree that entails.

AMG, in case the letters are new to you, is the badge worn by models from the lunatic part of the Mercedes-Benz empire that comes up with its loudest, fastest cars, both for the street and the race track.

The outfit began by offering wheels and bodykits, then performance enhancements, all the while taking time to modify cars for racing. Eventually it was bought up by Mercedes-Benz, giving AMG the resources to take its mad scientist fiddling to a whole new level.

Case in point – the C 63 AMG. If you take a second look, you’ll see it has a front end completely different to that of the regular C-Class, partially to accommodate a wider track, but mostly to create room for that giant V8 engine. And what an engine!
