THIS WILL BE BMW’s last year in Formula One.
In a hastily arranged press conference, BMW’s Dr Norbert Reithofer, Chairman of the Board of Management of BMW AG, announced that the manufacturer will not continue racing in F1 after 2009.
The news has shocked fans around the world, especially after the drama of late in the F1 world. Dr Reithofer also mentioned that the reason behind the withdrawal was ‘not our current performance in Formula One racing or the general economic situation. It was solely the company’s strategic realignment.’
Instead, the German manufacturer says that they will be diverting resources towards technological development work, citing the importance of sustainability.
The announcement even surprised BMW’s F1 driver Nick Heidfeld. The German driver said on his website: “BMW’s decision no longer to compete in Formula One was totally unexpected. I feel very sorry for the members of the team with whom it has been my privilege to work over the years. I would like to thank all of them for their tremendous support and for everything we have achieved together.”
With regards to its other motor sports involvement, BMW says that they will continue in their touring car and Formula BMW race activities.
