GT Radial launches Champiro HPY ultra-high performance tyre in Jakarta
By Daryl Lee
GT RADIAL RECENTLY launched its flagship ultra-high performance asymmetric tyre, the Champiro HPY, at the Sentul International Circuit near Jakarta, Indonesia, for its dealers, distributors and the media. CarBuyer also got to sample the latest tyre on the track.
The tyre itself is a significant milestone in the GT Radial lineup of tyres and the Champiro HPY is a ‘Y’-rated performance tyre, meaning it can be used at speeds of up to 300km/h.
Its asymmetric tread pattern promises exciting handling in both wet and dry conditions, and its wet braking capabilities were demonstrated at the circuit’s paddock area.
Water was liberally sprayed onto the loose, pockmarked surface and the Champiro performed admirably in an emergency wet braking test against two other identical Toyota Camrys which were shod with competing brands.
Next, the Champiro HPY’s dry handling characteristics were proven on the Sentul circuit with us being taken on as passengers on a quick lap by professional drivers.
We were given an opportunity to drive a lap and initial impressions were that the Champiro was remarkably quiet for a performance tyre, and while there was some sidewall flex, it was well controlled.
There was also a long left-handed sweeping corner in particular that had water sprayed on it and the Champiro HPY resisted aquaplaning well.
Unfortunately, we weren’t given enough time as we’d have liked with the tyres and this wasn’t helped by them already being quite worn out, in addition to having a flat spot by the time we tested them.
However, with prices for the HPY starting at $125-$160 for the 17-inch tyre, we think it’s pretty unbeatable, at least on value and performance.
The Champiro HPY is available at most tyre shops.
