S4 Avant may look big, but wait till it embarrasses the hot hatches
|
Thinking that this is another vapid, clinical and ‘by-the-book’ Audi is something that could get you into trouble. Saying it aloud would give you the same effect of telling the stoutest guy in the bar that you think he’s gay – before you know it, your head’s been smacked. That’s exactly what this car’s 333bhp supercharged V6 can do to you. It may sound like a loud Volkswagen Golf GTI (sort of like meeting David Beckham then hearing his voice), but set the Audi drive select system in ‘Dynamic’ mode and the car becomes a sort of giant, mechanical bicep of Mike Tyson, reacting instantly to your ankle’s most miniscule movements. It’s not just dramatic. It’s one hell of a ride, which, incidentally, can be said about how it drives as well. The S4 Avant we tested comes armed with Audi’s four-wheel drive quattro system and had the optional sport differential fitted, a device which sends more torque to its outer rear wheels, reducing understeer significantly and giving its slightly numb steering a more accurate feel. The differential, paired with its engine and firm suspension, is designed to inject adrenaline directly into your bloodstream. The combination enables the S4 Avant to laugh at the laws of physics. Seeing the estate charge around bends is like seeing Tyson break-dancing – your eyes tell you that he’s not agile enough, but your brain can’t quite comprehend what you’ve just seen. The car just has plenty of grip, and then more, before it even hints of giving up.
