Topless German models

Audi launches two new topless models

By Daryl Lee

IF YOU ARE hoping that we’re talking about two hot-blooded, sexy German models, you’re right.

Audi has launched the A5 and S5 Cabriolet models here, both of which their coupe versions have sold well since their arrival in 2008.

The two new cabriolets, which were launched at Capella, Sentosa, feature a folding fabric roof, as opposed to a retractable hard top. The last soft-top convertible launched here by Audi was the A3 Cabriolet.

The two cabriolet models’ fabric roofs will deploy in 15 seconds and close in 17 seconds. One important aspect is that the roof is operable at speeds of up to 50km/h. The cars here come with an acoustically-optimised roof, which Audi claims can almost reduce wind noise to the levels of the Coupe.

Audi has launched both models with the quattro four-wheel drive system. While they will also both have seven-speed S tronic gearboxes, the A5 will have a 211bhp, 2.0-litre turbocharged in-line four engine, while the more powerful S5 Cabriolet will get the 333bhp, supercharged V6 also found in the new S4 and S4 Avant.

Mercedes-Benz’ replacement of its CLK convertibles mean that the Audi now battles BMW even more. Against its Bavarian rival, the A5 Cabriolet takes 7.3 seconds to launch itself to 100km/h – 0.3 seconds faster than BMW’s $220,800 325i Convertible.

Pitting the S5 Cabriolet against the $275,800 BMW 335i Convertible, the Audi is faster to a hundred by 0.4 seconds, beating the latter’s 6.0 seconds, and also costs $7,800 less.

Additional features to make both the A5 and S5 Cabriolets more comfortable to live with include electric seat-belt extenders, so drivers won’t have to strain themselves while reaching around for their belt.

Audi also touts a special coating for the leather seats, which prevents them from becoming too warm to sit on even while under direct sunlight. It works by reflecting the warming infrared radiation, and is said to be able to decrease the surface temperature by up to 20 degrees Celsius.

Audi’s drive select system is also standard on both cars, allowing drivers to fine-tune the suspension settings, throttle and steering response to their preferences.

The S5 Cabriolet comes with the multi-media interface (MMI) navigation and entertainment system with Bang & Olufsen speakers as standard equipment. This is available as a cost option on the A5 Cabriolet.

The A5 and S5 Cabriolet will command a $25,000 and $21,800 premium, respectively, over their Coupe versions. Prices have been pegged at $204,900 for the A5 Cabriolet and $268,000 for the S5 Cabriolet.

Audi’s local distributor, Premium Automobiles, is currently taking bookings for both cars and the first deliveries are expected to start from October 30.
