Hammer to fall

BMW M5 (A) $448,800 with COE
A generous 507bhp from the evocative V10 powerplant is supplanted by an equally hair-raising soundtrack. The M5, like the 5 Series, is getting old, but hardly shows its age. In this iteration too, it’s probably the most capable (albeit single-minded) sport sedan around, taking the already fun to drive 5 Series and propelling it further into the stratosphere.

Jaguar XFR (A) $380,000 with COE
Jaguar has always been the quiet alternative to the two German giants, but with the XFR is an enormously talented package with style, comfort and lots of performance on tap. A supercharged V8 lets the big cat keep pace effortlessly, but the star is the sub $400k price tag – a relative bargain.
