Hyundai Staria launched in Singapore

Hyundai launches futuristic Staria people carrier in Singapore; large seven-seater MPV priced at S$231,999 with COE

Hyundai has launched the Staria MPV in Singapore, with the seven-seater people carrier retailing for S$231,999 inclusive of COE. The Staria is part of Hyundai’s line-up of what it calls ‘purpose-built vehicles’ (PBVs), and while it is available as a commercial van in overseas markets, locally the Staria is positioned as a large family oriented MPV.

The futuristic-looking Staria boasts a unique spaceship-like design, with its low-set headlights, and the LED lighting strip that stretches across the bonnet, but the rear end is slightly more traditional with its vertical-stacked taillights. It also features an expansive glasshouse, with large windows allowing plenty of light into the cabin.

The Staria measures in at a massive 5,253mm long, 1,997mm wide and 1,990mm tall, with a wheelbase of 3,273mm, giving it an enormous cabin that Hyundai says is ‘lounge-like’. The two seats in the middle row are electronically adjustable and can recline fully, with what Hyundai calls a ‘one-touch relaxation mode’.

Hyundai adds that even with the second row seats reclined, there is enough room to accommodate a full-sized adult in the third row. The seats are also heated and ventilated, while the windows come with curtains for added privacy.

Up front, there are further touches to help maximise space usage, such as the push-button style gear selector, and even the glovebox, which has been moved forward for more space. The dashboard features a 10.25-inch all-digital instrument cluster that’s placed high up and in plain sight of the driver, while infotainment is accessed via the 8-inch touchscreen that incorporates Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

Standard features include a 64-colour ambient mood lighting, a premium Bose sound system, and a stack of driver assistance safety features including adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, forward collision assist and blind spot collision assist, as well as the blind spot camera system that’s found in the Santa Fe.

Power for the Staria comes from a 3.5-litre V6 petrol engine that’s essentially identical to the one found in the Palisade luxury SUV, but in this application has been tuned to produce 272hp and 331Nm of torque, a slight reduction from the Palisade’s output. 0-100km/h comes in 8.9 seconds, while top speed is rated at 210km/h.
