Local Hyundai distributor Komoco Motors has announced the arrival of the new fourth-gen Hyundai Tucson in Singapore, with the SUV featuring a dramatic redesign and improved safety features. There will also be a new hybrid-powered version for the first time, with the Tucson Hybrid expected to go on sale here towards the end of 2021.

In the meantime, the initial launch model for Singapore is the 1.6-litre turbocharged petrol, which produces 180hp and 265Nm of torque, matched to a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. It allows the car to go from 0-100km/h in 8.8 seconds, and reach a top speed of 201km/h. Fuel efficiency is rated at 6.7 litres per 100km, and it lands in the VES B neutral banding.

The Tucson Hybrid variant that will arrive later this year will use a similar 1.6-litre petrol engine, and when mated to the electric motor, will have a total output of 226hp and 350Nm of torque, paired with a six-speed automatic. Performance and efficiency figures for the local spec has not been revealed, but the hybrid is expected to gain a A2 banding under VES for a S$15,000 rebate.

Two models of the Tucson 1.6 Turbo are available, with the standard version retailing for S$146,999 inclusive of COE. That version comes with features such as blind spot collision warning, rear cross traffic warning, an electric-powered tailgate, and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity.

The top-spec Tucson 1.6 Turbo S model meanwhile goes for S$151,999 including COE, and adds a whole host of features on top of the base model. These include forward collision assist, lane keeping assist, adaptive cruise control, blind spot collision assist, rear cross traffic assist, and wireless smartphone charging.

The Tucson has been extensively redesigned, and features Hyundai’s new ‘Sensuous Sportiness’ design language. The front end design is dominated by the striking grille design that hides the car’s headlights, which Hyundai calls Parametric Hidden Lights. When switched off, the lights appear hidden and blend in with the rest of the grille design.

The rear end design is similarly dramatic, with a similar style of parametric hidden lights for the taillights. The rear wiper is also hidden under the rear roof spoiler, a first for Hyundai. In terms of dimensions, the Tucson has grown slightly over its predecessor, increasing by 20mm, 15mm and 5mm in length, width and height respectively. Wheelbase has also been upped by 10mm for increased legroom for rear passengers.

The interior of the new Tucson also now features a more premium design, with the use of better quality materials. The 8.0-inch touchscreen dominates the centre console, and is the access point for all major vehicle functionalities, including audio, infotainment and climate control settings. It is complemented by the 10.25-inch digital instrument cluster that is fully customisable, and is designed to allow for a cleaner look for the interior.

The Tucson is Hyundai’s best-selling model globally, having sold over 7 million units since the first generation model debuted in 2004. The latest model marks another significant step for the Korean carmaker to offer bold designs and leading edge tech in their core models, following on from the Avante which was launched last year and has gone on to become a strong selling hit.
