Lamborghini Countach: A S$3.6m heritage hybrid

Deliveries get underway for the Lamborghini Countach LPI 800-4 hybrid in early 2022, but how many are headed for Singapore?

SINGAPORE — You know the name if you’re any sort of car fan, but if not, then meet the Lamborghini Countach. It’s one of its most evocative nameplates in auto history, and is being revived for a car that puts an exotic, glamorous face on Lambo’s transition to electrification.

The Countach LPI 800-4 is a hybrid homage to the wedge-shaped icon with scissor doors that Lamborghini built from 1974 to 1990 (pictured below).

The modern revival costs US$2.64 million (that’s S$3.6m in our money) without taxes, but with no right-hand drive version in the works it’s not something you’ll ever see on the roads here.

Pity, that. An in-house design (the original was styled by Bertone), the new Countach is made of carbonfibre and has a 6.5-litre V12 paired with a 34 horsepower, 48-volt motor fed by a supercapacitor.

The storage device can charge and discharge electric current much more quickly than normal batteries but is much smaller and lighter; the motor and supercapacitor weigh just 34kg in total.

Together the V12 and motor churn out 814 horsepower — the “800” in the name is a rounding down of the output figure— and send it to all four wheels.

That’s enough to launch the Countach to 100km/h in 2.8 seconds. 0 to 200km/h takes 8.6 seconds, and the top speed is similarly superlative, at 355km/h.

The Countach rides on staggered rims (20” front and 21” rear) with a retro “telephone dial” design, and has four-wheel steering, carbon ceramic brakes and active suspension dampers.

Inside, it has an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with a special “Stile” button. Press that, and a video explaining the car’s design philosophy comes up on the screen.

Lamborghini pulled the covers off the Countach LPI 800-4 last earlier this month Monterey Car Week in the States, and said deliveries will start early next year. They’ll end soon after because only 112 will be built — LP112 was the project name for the original Countach. Reportedly, the 112 car run has already been totally spoken for.

While the new Countach isn’t road legal here, limited edition Lamborghinis have found ready buyers in our market. Three local buyers reportedly snapped up Reventon Roadsters, meaning Singapore effectively accounted for a fifth of the open top car’s total output.

Asked how many of the LPI 800-4 are headed here, a spokesperson for Lamborghini Asia Pacific only said, “Singapore, like other countries in Asia is an important market for car collectors and we have many close clients that love limited edition cars, especially the Countach.”

Translation: it’s not a question of whether the car is ending up in collectors’ hands here, but of how many.
