Local Hyundai distributor Komoco Motors has confirmed that the updated Hyundai Santa Fe SUV will be launched here in September. For the first time, the Santa Fe will come with hybrid power, as detailed in our news story on CarBuyer in June last year. Pricing details are yet to be confirmed by Komoco, but we estimate that it should land somewhere around the S$180,000 mark or so with COE.

The Santa Fe’s hybrid powertrain consists of a 1.6-litre turbocharged engine paired with an electric motor, and the combined output is rated at 230hp, allowing the car to go from 0-100km/h in 8.9 seconds, and reach a top speed of 187km/h. Fuel consumption is quoted at 5.5L/100km, but despite the addition of the hybrid powertrain, the Santa Fe sits in the neutral VES band B, and thus does not attract any additional rebates.

Despite being a mid-life update, the Santa Fe actually sits on a new platform, one that’s shared with its Korean cousin the Kia Sorento. The new third-generation Hyundai vehicle platform has been engineered to offer more agile handling, while at the same time reducing noise, vibration and harshness (NVH) for a more refined ride. It has also been stiffened to provide greater protection for passengers by being able to absorb collision impacts better.

The design of the Santa Fe has been heavily revised, and features a larger grille that now merges with the T-shaped daytime running lights (DRLs). At the rear, there is now a thin reflector strip that stretches across the tailgate, and connects the taillights together.

The interior has also been updated, and Singapore-bound cars will have an 8.0-inch touchscreen infotainment system that comes with wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity. A wireless smartphone charger is also standard, as is a head-up display for the driver.

The Santa Fe also comes with an extensive list of advanced driver assistance systems, as part of Hyundai’s SmartSense suite of safety systems. New features include Forward Collision-Avoidance Assist with Junction Turning, which can detect cars, pedestrians and cyclists even while turning at junctions, and activate autonomous braking as appropriate.

There’s also Reverse Parking Collision-Avoidance Assist, which can detect pedestrians and obstacles while reversing at low speeds, and apply the brakes if necessary to prevent a collision, while the usual blind spot warning and collision avoidance assistance systems are also present on the Santa Fe as well.
