No official word on the reborn Honda – Acura Integra but we’re 99 percent sure it ain’t right hand drive, nor coming to Singapore

SINGAPORE – The resurrected Honda Integra has made waves on the Internet recently and it’s made feel-good waves for all the right reasons, but Singaporean car fans should probably not read into it to avoid disappointment because it’s not coming here.

If you want to continue along that line, the new Integra will have five-door liftback style – like the original from 1985, and it’s offered with a 1.5-litre turbocharged engine and six-speed manual (remember those?) transmission.

Officially the word from Honda Singapore is it has no word. But our very confident guess is it will not be coming to Singapore and we are quite sure you won’t be able to import one either because it won’t be made in right-hand drive.

Firstly, the new Integra has been revealed only as an Acura, ie Honda’s luxury arm that exists in the USA only. Secondly, the car will be made in the USA.

While you could argue that new Hondas can be global models – like the current Civic or the Jazz hatchback – Acura badging and US production mean the prime mover for this model is left-hand drive market sales. It’s not like BMW, whose Spartanburg plant builds cars for the rest of the world like the X4 and X5.

Also note that in contrast to previous Integras, the left-hand drive model is debuting first, rather than the JDM one, which does not bode well for right-hand drive availability.

If we do get a new Honda hatchback, it’s likely to be this one: The Civic five-door hatch above. But given how that one didn’t do too well the last time around, we’re also not betting strongly on it. If we were Honda, we’d put our money into making sure more hybrids – like the excellent Jazz – get to electrified-motoring ready Singapore rather than reviving old glories.
