Tesla Model 3 owner in Singapore demonstrates going from one to 100 percent at a Supercharger station

UPDATE April 2022: Tesla has just introduced per-kWh charging for its Superchargers, so charging a Tesla is no longer free and would cost from S$20 upwards, depending on the model.

SINGAPORE
A local Tesla owner has shown how long it takes to charge a Tesla Model 3 from almost zero to 100 percent via Supercharger. The answer is 46 minutes, and the cost was nothing.

Tesla owner Koh Jie Meng demonstrated this on his Facebook post. Along with the video, Mr Koh shared a screen capture of his charge report – which would surprise many as it cost him zero dollars for the full charge of 52.2kWh.

Did someone say 410km of range for free?

Although it was not mentioned which Tesla Supercharger station he visited, we speculate that it looks like the fourth station which Tesla recently opened, now located in the West.

How does this work? Tesla’s Supercharger is basically a fancy name for DC fast-charging technology, and it can jam electrons back into a battery at a rate of 250kW, although DC chargers in Singapore are currently limited to a maximum of 200kW under TR25:2016 regulations.

For Mr Koh’s car seems to be a Tesla Model 3 Standard Range Plus with a battery of 50kWh capacity and a maximum DC charge rate of 170kW, a 10 to 80 percent charge would take around 20 minutes. However the maximum charge time is much longer, at 46 minutes, because batteries charge slower above 80 percent.

That’s the what, where, how, but what about the ‘how much’? He paid nothing because at this point in time, Tesla does not charge for owners using its Superchargers. In contrast, an SP DC 50kW fast charger would have cost S$0.52/kWh, or around S$25.

That’s because EV owners are most likely to charge at home, rather than in public. This might change as EV usage changes though, and we’re sure Tesla will eventually start billing customers for Supercharging. For now though, the ‘first hit’ is free.

Tesla recently opened a second Tesla showroom at Milennia Walk, and it was also clearly the best-selling electric car in 2021.
