Near-perfect 99 percent score for adult occupant protection is a new record; Mercedes GLB also scores highly in latest round of tests
Brussels, Belgium
Want to be in a car crash? Of course you don’t. But if you were to experience one, you’d want to be in the new Mazda CX-30 when it happens.
That’s because it’s the first car to attain a score of 99 percent in the adult occupant protection portion of Euro NCAP’s new car crash tests, beating previous top scorers like the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Mazda 3, and Volvo XC60, all of which scored 98 percent.

This test assesses potential injury to passengers in four scenarios: offset frontal crash (hitting a deformable barrier at 64km/h), full-width frontal crash (hitting a solid wall at 50km/h), side impact (simulating another car crashing into the subject at 50km/h) and side impact pole (simulating the subject skidding off the road and hitting a tree at 32km/h). In the latter three scenarios, the CX-30 achieved full marks.
In addition to crash safety, Euro NCAP also looks at child occupant protection, vulnerable road users protection (pedestrians and cyclists), and safety assist (active safety technology). The CX-30 scored 86 percent, 80 percent and 77 percent respectively in these tests.
Naturally, this strong showing netted the CX-30 the maximum possible five-star safety rating. Can’t wait to get your hands on one? The CX-30 is coming to Singapore ‘soon’ – we’re betting on a debut at the 2020 Singapore Motorshow.
In the same round of Euro NCAP tests, the Mercedes-Benz GLB also scored five stars, continuing a fine run of form that has seen every single Mercedes-Benz tested since 2014 achieve the same.
Here is a summary and highlights of scores under current assessment standards. Numbers in bold denote best scores for that test:
