BMW’s executive coupe makes a bold statement with new styling, plenty of tech, offered in 420i and 430i models at launch

The new BMW 4 Series Coupe has just been launched in Singapore, and is initially available here in two variants, the 420i and 430i.

While we’ve detailed the overall specifications and design elements of the car in an earlier story, here’s the full rundown of what local buyers can expect to find when they drop in at Performance Motors Limited, BMW’s official dealership in Singapore.

Prices for the new BMW 4 Series Coupe in Singapore are as follows: S$218,888 for the 420i Coupe M Sport, and S$266,888 for the 430i Coupe M Sport Pro. Both prices include Certificate Of Entitlement (COE). 

But before we get started – what about that nose?

We actually have an answer from somebody who nose, sorry, knows: Current managing director for BMW Asia, Christopher Wehner, was Head of Product Management Midsize Class BMW before he left Germany to take up his current role here in Singapore, and worked with the 4 Series development team.

“I think this is the quintessence of a BMW coupe, because it’s characterful, sporty and prestigious,” Mr Wehner told CarBuyer. “We always look to our target customer, and the 4 Series customer is a little bit more extroverted.”

“We wanted to have more differentiation to the 3 Series. It should be more characterful,” he added. “Then of course, we want to have a lot of differentiation to the predecessor, to really offer our customers something new.”

The second-generation BMW 4 Series Coupe is 128mm longer than the previous car, which stretches it out to a lengthy 4,768 mm.

Despite being built on the same foundations as the 3 Series sedan, it’s actually slightly larger. By comparison, the 3 Series is just 4,709mm long. The 4 Series Coupe also sits 57mm lower and has 23mm more width, along with wider tracks for, you know, handling. 

The car is a four-seater, and the rear bench has two sculpted seats. Luggage capacity is decent at 440 litres though, and the 40:20:40 split rear bench allows for much more carrying capacity when required.

For now the range starts with the 420i M Sport, which is powered by a 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbocharged petrol engine. It has 184 horsepower and a peak torque output of 300 Newton-metres. It covers the 0-100km/h sprint in a brisk 7.5 seconds. Fuel economy is rated at 5.8L/100km, with a CO2 emissions figure of 135g/km.

Standard equipment for the 420i includes sports seats, a chunky sports leather steering wheel, and eight-speed Steptronic Sport automatic transmission which delivers even sharper shift dynamics than the standard Steptronic transmission.

BMW says the 420i M Sport offers sharp handling on the back of its standard-fit variable sport steering system and M Sport suspension, with dampers tuned for more responsive driving dynamics.

It rides on 18-inch wheels, and M Sport brakes with blue or red painted calipers are an option (go on, you know you want to). While the interior is upholstered in Alcantara and Sensatec (a name that BMW gives to its synthetic leather material), a more premium Vernasca leather is optional.

Meanwhile, the 430i M Sport Pro is also powered by a 2.0-litre, four cylinder turbo engine but has its output turned up to 258 horsepower with a peak torque of 400Nm. It covers the 0 to 100km/h dash in 5.8 seconds, has a fuel economy of 6.2L/100km, and CO2 emissions of 144g/km.

It’s not just faster, but packs in more premium equipment too like the Adaptive M suspension with electronically controlled dampers along with the variable sport steering system. 19-inch bicolour wheels and M Sport brakes with red calipers are standard fit, as are the leather Vernasca M Sport seats.

An M Sport differential with electronically controlled, fully variable locking is available as an option for the all-new BMW 430i Coupe. It works in tandem with the Adaptive M suspension, so for now it appears that it cannot be fitted to the 420i. You’ll want it because it should allow cleaner blasts out of tight corners when things are slippery, or conversely, should make the 430i drift more neatly.

Overhead, you’ll find an opening glass roof on the 430i as well, along with a Harman Kardon surround sound system in the cabin.

Both the 420i and 430i are only sold here in M Sport trim, and along with the equipment described above also feature cosmetic enhancements such as larger air intake openings at the front. Exterior elements can also be specified in carbon fibre as an option.

The 4 Series comes packed with a full suite of active safety features. Front collision warning with brake intervention, lane departure warning with steering assistance and the speed limit info system are all standard equipment.

Additionally, the optional Driving Assistant Professional adds more features including a new Active Navigation system, which uses navigation data to detect any necessary lane changes for safer motoring.

Parking Assistant now also features the Reversing Assistant, where the car remembers the route it drove forwards for the last 50 metres and can automatically reverse the same way you got in, while the optional Parking Assistant Plus includes Surround View and Remote 3D View.

The 430i M Sport Pro gets a Head-Up Display onto a projection area that has been enlarged by 70 percent over the previous version.

Other soft features of note include the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, smartphone integration, and Remote Software Upgrade.

All 4 Series cars will use the BMW Live Cockpit Professional with a 12.-inch a digital instrument cluster behind the steering wheel and a 10.25-inch Control Display.

Along with wireless Apple CarPlay, the car’s operating system now also hosts wireless Android Auto. But iPhone users get an exclusive function with the BMW Digital Key. Just tap the phone to the door handle to unlock the car. Access can be shared with up to five people, including a configurable car access option for young drivers which restricts top speed and horsepower.

While market forces have seen the sporty two-door coupe decline in popularity over the last couple of years, it’s still a body style that is associated with serious sports cars.

As such, BMW engineers have explained that the 4 Series is deliberately designed to have an even harder, more responsive ride than the 3 Series sedan.

They also took care to note that the 4 Series shouldn’t be seen as a better car than its 3 Series counterparts, but rather, designed to suit a different purpose.
