New Cars 2016: Kia

A diesel-powered Carens, a boldy styled Sportage and a more refined Optima to be added to Kia’s local pricelist in 2016

What: Carens 1.7 CRDi
When: January, 2016
How much: $113,999 with COE

Kia’s sporty looking seven-seat MPV gets a turbodiesel engine with the brand’s first seven-speed, twin-clutch auto. The 141 horsepower, 340Nm engine should offer decent poke with indecent frugality – 4.8L/100km is the claimed average. The Kia is also being used as something of a test case: Will Singaporean Kia buyers take to diesel power?

What: Sportage
When: April, 2016
How much: $130,000 with COE (est.)

The new Sportage crossover is Kia’s answer to the Toyota RAV4, so think five-seats with a tall ride height. Off-roading ability should be fairly limited, however, and we expect only front-wheel drive versions to make it here. The Sportage shows off Kia’s new styling direction, with the headlamps sited above the grille instead of flanking it, and Kia says the cabin will feature some of the poshest materials ever used by the brand. The 2.0-litre, 151 horsepower, six-speed auto combo used in the previous Sportage will make it over into the new one.

What: Optima
When: January, 2016
How much: $123,999 with COE

It might not look vastly different, but Kia’s Optima has had a total revamp. Its body is 50 per cent stiffer than before, and there’s more cabin room, thanks to growth in wheelbase (by 10mm), height (10mm) and width (25mm). The “tiger nose” grille is familiar, but the rear has noticeably slimmer LED lamps. Kia says the cabin materials are better quality ones, and that more soundproofing material has been added. The suspension has been reworked for sharper handling with a comfier ride, too. The 2.0-litre, 163 horsepower six-speed auto will be carried over.
