Kia

What: EV6
Variants: TBA
When: March
How Much: From S$200,000 with COE

This is an obvious winner for one of the most anticipated cars of 2022: It’s Kia’s premium (not quite luxury) electric car, the EV6. A midsize SUV running on the same platform as the sort-of-launched-in-Singapore Hyundai Ioniq 5.

We’ve gone into more detail on the EV6 on CarBuyer in our previous story  including the new design approach taken by Kia, but long story short, it’s a very impressive looking piece of technology. Since it runs on Hyundai Group’s E-GMP platform, the car uses 800V electric system to allow for extra-fast charging of up to 240kW, which isn’t far off a Porsche Taycan’s 270kW system that’s currently the fastest around. And speaking of Taycans, the top-tier EV6 will pack 584hp and crack 0-100km/h in only 3.7-seconds.

There’s no confirmation of exactly which variants will come here, as detailed in our story mentioned, there are five versions ranging from 168hp to 584hp, with single or dual motor options, as well smaller and larger battery capacities (Standard, Long Range).  Pricing is the key point, as usual, and with the EV rebates still in effect, we think a starting price of around S$200k with COE is not unrealistic.

Kia’s Sonet is an all-new addition to the compact SUV segment – we see if it feels like a budget car, or if it aims at a higher experience

What: Sonet
Variant: 1.5 petrol
When: Now
How Much: S$109,000 with COE

Kia’s new compact SUV joins the lineup as an alternative to the Stonic, which is less tall and more crossover-y, contrasting the boxy, in-yer-face looks of the Sonet. Our launch story details everything and we already have a road test of the car here in Singapore. Long story short, the Sonet is an excellent example of a compact SUV, being cost-effective and avoiding the pitfalls of some compact cars which feel very built to cost. The car also debuts Kia’s Connect Lite connectivity-app service, which will roll out in Q2, and is the first of its kind for a mainstream brand here.

Our test drive shows that the current diesel Sorento is an excellent SUV for Singapore families

What: Sorento Hybrid
Variant: Hybrid 1.6 turbo
When: Q1
How Much : S$200,000 with COE

Kia’s big seven-seat SUV, the Sorento, has lots going for it as our test drive proved in 2020 – it’s spacious, packs plenty of tech, and delivers a premium-feeling/looking experience as well. The only downside is that there hasn’t been a petrol version until now.

The Sorento hybrid has a 1.6-litre turbo engine and electric motor with a system output of 226hp/350Nm and will do 0-100km/h in a decent sub-nine seconds. There’s no word on variants yet, but expect a similar approach to the current Sorento diesel which has higher variants that add more tech/safety features. As a large SUV, hybrid nature notwithstanding, the petrol-electric Sorento could perform well enough for a VES $15k rebate, which might help keep it extra cost-effective against the diesel Sorento. Officially, the car should ring up less than 7.0L/100km, but as a hybrid its real-life efficiency would almost certainly be better in Singapore.
