Nissan has pulled the wraps off the Z Proto, which previews the upcoming new Z-car that is scheduled to be launched in 2022. The Z Proto incorporates design touches that pays tribute to iconic Z-cars from the past.

“The Z, as a pure sports car, represents the spirit of Nissan,” said Nissan CEO Makoto Uchida. “It’s a key model in our Nissan NEXT transformation plan, and as a Z fan myself, I’m excited to announce that the next Z is coming.”

The Z Proto’s styling combines numerous elements that are reminiscent of previous Z-cars. The bright yellow pearlescent paint is a nod to the very first Fairlady 240Z from the 1970s, along with the long curved bonnet and distinctive swooping roofline. The rear taillamp treatment, meanwhile, with its black section running between the lights, is a throwback to the Z32 300ZX from the 90s. Finally, the squared-off front lower grille treatment is an acknowledgment to the 350Z that is the precursor to the current car.

The interior is all modern, with Nissan saying that it sought advice from “professional motorsports legends” to help it design a driver-focused cabin. The 12.3-inch digital instrument panel displays all the necessary information at a glance, and includes driver-centric details such as redline shift point placed at the 12 o’clock position on the rev counter.

Nissan has not released performance specs for the Z Proto, but confirmed that the upcoming car will have a twin-turbocharged V6 engine (likely to be based off the GTR’s powerplant) as well as a manual transmission option.

Nissan has been pushing hard on its electrification program this year, but the Z indicates that there is still room in Nissan’s future for an enthusiast-driven car. “With the launch this summer of the groundbreaking Ariya EV, we’ve started a new era of electrification and autonomous driving technology,” said Uchida. “With the Z, we’re bringing drivers the excitement of a pure sports car.”
