The National Stadium played host to a $10 million parade of American metal on Saturday

SINGAPORE — The National Stadium at Sports Hub is normally a place where people are obsessed with watching the grass grow, but yesterday it was the venue for a showcase of American metal.

198 Harley-Davidson motorcycles and 19 Jeeps, collectively worth roughly $10 million when new by our reckoning, rolled onto the track area at the invitation of Singapore Sports Hub.

“I’ve never seen so many bikes and cars in a stadium like this. It’s an amazing event,” said Sports Hub CEO Philippe Delavaud once the vehicles had rolled into place.

Singapore Sports Hub had invited the bikers and Jeep owners there as part of an community outreach effort, and took participants on an insider’s tour of the facility. “Sports Hub is all about lifestyle,” said Delavaud.

Lifestyle events like these are part of what draws people to the two iconic brands. Harley-Davidson riders are famously communal — the Harley Owners Group has more than 300 members in Singapore — and the available slots for them to join this event were quickly snapped up, said local importer Komoco Motorcycles.

Meanwhile, Jeep customers are in the process of registering the Jeep Owners Club of Singapore, or JOCS. Camaraderie accounts for a large part of the brand’s appeal for Jeep drivers. “It’s about the community,” said Shaun Tan, an off-roading enthusiast.

Authenticity is another source of his enthusiasm for the Jeep Wrangler that he’s had for three years. “No matter how much you modify it, it will never look like a Jeep,” he said of other 4×4 cars.

There’s the brand’s exclusivity, too. “You don’t see everyone driving a Jeep,” he said.

The Real Legends event marked the first time members of the public could drive into the National Stadium itself.

They were, however, asked to stay off the venue’s precious grass.

Apart from that, it seems pretty true what they say about Jeeps. There really are few places they can’t go.
