Rev Rides: Obakemono! (Nissan GT-R CBA-R35)

Believe it or not, the nickname “Godzilla/Gojira” was a nickname given to the Skyline GT-R, not by the Japanese, but rather, an English car magazine. We’re always excited to feature a GT-R. Our constant respect for Nissan’s “Obakemono” – a.k.a “monster”, has finally led us to this.

Just in case if you don’t know what the GT-R is, it’s Nissan’s ultra sporty range of cars. While also commonly being referred to as the “Skyline”, the new GT-R dropped the Skyline badge to reflect on its new “super car” status.

Since its release in 2007, the GT-R has been winning awards around the world with its mind-boggling acceleration capabilities as well as handling prowess. So, just how do you improve Japan’s best?

Our first encounter with this fearsome GT-R was nearly 3 years ago at a local drag race. Even so, it left a striking memory because of its unique body kit as well as red-on-black vinyls. That, as well as the epic battles with it fending off a mighty Mclaren MP4-12C as well as an Mitsubishi Evolution 8.

The second encounter was at a charity car wash. We were surprised to see that this car had undergone a complete transformation. No longer black, the car still retained the signature red highlights and a unique body kit. Our desires overflowed – we just had to get this ride in our magazine.

Even from a great distance, we could spot the distinctive Abflug-inspired front end, which has also been customised with carbon front lip that visually enhanced this car’s ground hogging low ride height.

Eager to show it’s best side, this GT-R also spots the Abflug-inspired side skirts. Now you may be wondering, why Abflug-inspired? Simply put, the GT-R, even in stock guise, poses a challenge to squeeze through tight corners, and the Abflug kit only makes it wider. It’ll be perfect elsewhere, but on our narrow streets plus cramped parking places, every centimetre counts.

That’s the reason why Albert chose to customise his body kit to retain the original GT-R’s dimensions while being able to achieve the look he desired. With the custom bumpers and skirts, even the front fenders had to be custom-made for this car – closely following the lines of the custom kit for the perfect fit.

With the rear boot replaced with a lighter option, what really caught our attention is a very distinct wing. Sure, the custom work for new wing mounts is cool, but nothing can be cooler than saying: “My Lamborghini wing was just lying around.”

The rear bumper had to be custom made as well to keep the car from swelling out sideways. Completed in carbon and sticking to the Varis design, it simply bristles with vents. Not to mention, those huuuge exhaust tips of the bellow-y Amuse exhaust system. Well, the bumper now matches the bonnet in the vents count department, and it looks totally swell!

Opening the doors presented an interior that never ceases to amaze; the level of detail that Albert had fussed over for many months. It’s glossy red carbon as far as the eye can see, from the door panels, door inserts, dashboard, centre console and even to the rear passenger space, where the centre console has been finished in carbon. We haven’t even got to the best part: The custom Alcantara interior wrap for that extra injection of sportiness!

One may argue that a twin turbo, 3.8 litre engine, coupled with mind-bending acceleration is enough for a super-car killer… Well, the first thing that caught our eye bolted to the VR38DET is the beautiful, one-piece Boost Logic intake manifold, with a larger plenum size to maximize power gains. It also features tapered venture funnel runners that ensures the maximum air velocity all the way to the cylinders.

Bolted onto the new intakes are a pair of HKS blow-off valves, an enlarged Trust Greddy High Flow Fuel Rail Set to feed the larger, fuel-hungry 1,000cc fuel injectors. With such an increase in airflow, Albert chose another unique modification: The IP spark coils. These are ignition coils with a high power amplifier built-in, to help generate more spark energy than stock coils and also generate an ultra fast multi spark discharge. The result? Much more power available on command and served almost instantaneously!

Modest power gains it may have, but stopping power comes courtesy of the drool-inducing Endless 6pot/4pot brakes with 400mm rotors up front to slow this Japanese rocket down at face-hurting ferocity.

The upgraded brake kits demanded wheels big enough to accommodate them. Enter more drool-inducing goodies from Japan: Yokohama Advan Racing GT wheels in 20×10.5 up front and 20×11 in the rear. These one-piece mold-form forged wheel with 5-spoke design are also premium versions. Instead of stickers, the logos were machined directly into the spoke. The wheel color is full gloss Racing Gloss Black. This wheels are also the first Yokohama Advan wheels to feature the exclusive spoke logos.

Having a GT-R is special considering how much a car can dost on the road today, and the owners spare no expense at differentiating their cars from the rest of the club members. But until we find a twin, Albert’s GT-R is by far, the most distinctive “Godzilla” that we have seen to date!
