The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé proudly continues the brand’s tradition of making some of the finest coupes in the world

This is the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé, and the fact that it looks the way it does – loud, proud and unafraid of being bold, should come as absolutely no surprise. 

Christopher Wehner knows exactly why. Before his current role as the Managing Director of BMW Group Asia, he was ‘Head of Product Management, Midsize Class’ for BMW AG, which meant he was intimately involved in the planning and conceptualisation of the all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé. 

“BMW coupes are dream cars, anchors of the family, and also the basis of the BMW M high-performance models. From now on, the number 4 will stand for a more self-confident and expressive series of products,” he says.

A history on leading edge 

There is always something extra-special about a BMW with two doors. The Bavarian company’s heritage of stunning coupes and convertibles provide decades of proof: The 1936 BMW 328, 1956 BMW 503, 1972 BMW 3.0 CSL, 1989 BMW 8 Series, 2000 BMW Z8. These are just a few examples from the very long, and very illustrious, list.  

The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is a clear continuation of this key strand of BMW DNA: Building exciting cars which are not content to just toe the performance line, but to entirely redefine what coupes should look like, how they move us, and how they drive. 

Brothers in arms 

There’s no mistaking the new front end of the BMW 4 Series Coupé with its vertically-emphasised kidney grille. No matter your reaction to it, know that BMW has excellent reasons for its radical new design. 

Firstly, a link to history: Taller kidney grilles were already seen on the BMW 328 and BMW 3.0 CSi/CSL coupes, legendary two-doors which the 4 Series Coupe has a clear lineage to. 

Secondly, the BMW 4 Series Coupé is being more clearly defined in its own right. BMW fans will remember that the car was, in the past, the BMW 3 Series Coupe, with the BMW 4 Series Coupé designation appearing in 2013 when BMW moved all its coupes to an even-numbering scheme. 

“All BMW 4 Series Coupé models will show a complete differentiation from the current BMW 3 Series Sedan, as we believe our cars have individual characters just as our customers do,” says Mr Wehner. 

The BMW 3 Series is the sportiest car you can get in the executive sedan class, but now it’s more clear than ever: If you want a little more of BMW’s emotional engagement, the BMW 4 Series is the car that’s making eyes at you. 

Sculpted to move

BMW knows how to make handsome two doors and the BMW 4 Series Coupé easily qualifies as another, thanks to its athletic proportions, precise lines, and dynamic details.

Compared to the capable BMW 3 Series Sedan, the BMW 4 Series Coupé is significantly lower and wider, and its precise lines, slim windows, long doors, and graceful roofline add elegance to its ready-to-pounce poise.

These elements are immediately reminiscent of BMW’s top-flight Grand Tourer, the BMW 8 Series Coupé. The headlights feature a distinct light signature, as do the slim and flowing taillights, which are darkened for an even sportier look. 

Driving ahead 

The all-new BMW 4 Series Coupé is available in Singapore in BMW 420i M Sport and BMW 430i M Sport Pro (shown here) variants. Both are powered by the latest four-cylinder, 2.0-litre engine with TwinPower Turbo technology and an eight-speed Steptronic Sport transmission that sends power to the rear wheels.

The BMW 420i M Sport has 184hp and 300Nm of torque, with a 0-100km/h time of 7.5 seconds, while the BMW 430i M Sport Pro has 258hp and 400Nm of torque, which delivers a 0-100km/h time of just 5.8 seconds.

Both versions of the BMW 4 Series Coupé deliver top-level driver enjoyment with turbocharged torque for strong, instantaneous accelerative power paired with excellent efficiency.

There is also a new Sprint function available only on the BMW 430i M Sport Pro, which optimises the drivetrain for peak performance at the single engagement of the ‘minus’ shift paddle, and is useful for quick overtakes or to feel the impressive performance of the 4 Series Coupe. 

The BMW 4 Series Coupé not only delivers a highly emotive and dynamic driving experience, it also supports the driver extensively, thanks to its broad range of safety systems. This includes Front collision warning with brake intervention, Lane Departure Warning including lane return (with steering assistance), and it will also remind you of speed limits while on the road.

Highly empowered 

As expected of a BMW two-door, the BMW 4 Series Coupé has excellent dynamic performance, but that is further heightened by the models’ respective M Sport packages.

In addition to the more dynamic footprint, the BMW 4 Series Coupé has increased body stiffness and a lower centre of gravity than the BMW 3 Series, the perfect basis for a fine-handling coupe. 

The BMW 420i M Sport features specially-tuned M Sport suspension with lift-related dampers, 18-inch M light alloy wheels, variable sport steering, and optional M Sport brakes (with blue or red calipers) for improved stopping power. 

The BMW 430i M Sport Pro takes that a step further 19-inch BMW Individual Bicolour wheels framing red M Sport brakes and Adaptive M Suspension for top performance on all road conditions. There is also the option of an electronically-controlled, fully-variable locking rear differential for further enhanced dynamic performance.

The central 10.25-inch Control Display, featuring BMW Operating System 7.0, allows control via touchscreen or the iDrive controller, as well as the BMW Intelligent Personal Assistant, which is the most advanced speech interaction system available today. In a first for a luxury coupe, drivers can link up smartphones via Apple Carplay or Android Auto entirely without wires.

BMW ConnectedDrive is also standard on the car, with its own 4G LTE connectivity enabling you to book a service, monitor Real Time Traffic Information, or make requests via the Concierge Service, all directly from the car itself.
