VW Passat 1.4 TSI Review: Passing Marks

Sardinia, Italy – We can’t quite get away from the fact that bigger executive cars feel better (in terms of both performance and poise) with torquier engines. This was most evident when we alternated between the twin-turbo TDI and petrol-powered 1.4 TSI at the launch of the latest, 8th generation VW Passat, a popular executive choice in Singapore. Of course, Singaporean buyers are known for favouring big bodies with the smallest possible engine choices, but despite its sub-1.4-tonnes kerbweight, the Passat still feels like it’s carrying a lot of weight for the 1.4-litre to deal with.

Well, everything. Lightweight construction for the powertrain, chassis, electrics, vehicle body and trim has helped the car shed up to 85kg versus its predecessor. The new engines aren’t just lighter than before, they’re also more fuel efficient. New looks and a distinct front and rear light signature give the Passat that sleekly ‘premium’ feel, while the dynamic cuts in the body provide a subtle sporting touch. A slightly longer wheelbase, yet reduced front and rear overhangs result in a dynamic road presence, yet there’s more cabin and stowage space within.

The good thing about Volkswagen’s position in the Group’s hierarchy means that it manages to offer a good deal of tech that may see action in more expensive machinery in the Group’s portfolio… not that we’re complaining of course. City Emergency Braking with Pedestrian Monitoring, Trailer Assist, Traffic Assist and Emergency Assist are just a few of the new features, while Park Assist 3 now supports head-in parking.

Like the new Audi TT, the Passat gets the Active Info Display as a cost-option, which features a digital instrument array that can be configured for various uses.

We only managed to try the six-speed manual, albeit in Variant and Sedan guises – Singapore will get the DSG naturally. Even with only two adults on board (and their associated barang-barang), getting brisk progress from the car really sees you stirring the six-speed, especially on the winding roads. The ride is softly sprung for some roll, but the body control is progressive and steering is decently dynamic. The sedan feels a lot crisper during fast road use compared to the Variant, although we did enjoy the latter’s progressive handling despite the slightly lower grip threshold than the sedan.

DB2014AL03248 small copyThere’s something to be said about medium executives being effortless to drive – save the hard work for the sportier models; the huge (and almost lazy) 500Nm of the twin-turbo TDI certainly reinforces this. The DSG might prove slightly different in character, but we’ll certainly update once we’ve had a go with four adults in tow.
