Tesla recalls U.S. delivered EVs over malfunctioning seat belt alert

More than 800,000 Tesla electric cars were deemed to have failed to comply with U.S. safety standards on occupant crash protection

WASHINGTON , U.S.A.

Tesla is recalling around 817,000 vehicles in the United States of America to rectify what the country’s National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) deems to be a potential safety hazard. The recall involves Tesla Model S, Model X, Model 3 and Model Y cars with an audible alert that may not activate when a vehicle starts moving and the driver has not buckled their seat belt.

Tesla has announced that it will perform an over-the-air (OTA) software update to solve the issue, and that it was unaware of any crashes or injuries related to this.

It was also revealed by the NHTSA that the non-functioning seat belt warning was discovered by the South Korea Automobile Testing & Research Institute in January 2022, and brought to Tesla’s attention.

American-made Tesla Model 3 cars are one of the models affected by the recall

It seems that a software error in some of the cars that have been sold may prevent the warning chime from activating under certain circumstances, and had discovered what triggers the malfunction. The problem appears when the chime was interrupted in the preceding drive cycle, and the seat belt was not buckled subsequent to that interruption.

Tesla added that its cars do have a secondary warning chime that activates when the car exceeds 25km/h and the driver seat belt is not detected as buckled. This secondary warning is not affected and continues to function under every circumstance.

Tesla has come under increasing scrutiny from U.S. regulators and issued a number of recalls in recent months. On 2nd February 2022, Tesla said it was recalling 53,822 U.S. vehicles with the company’s full self-driving software that may cause some models not come to a complete halt at intersections, posing a safety risk. The problem is also being addressed with an over-the-air software update that disables the “rolling stop” functionality, NHTSA said.

Singapore delivered Teslas meanwhile, seem to be largely free of electronic bugs as local stocks come directly from the Tesla manufacturing plant in Shanghai, China, rather than being built in America.
