SINGAPORE – BMW’s new iX large EV SUV will debut in Singapore in December. The car, in iX iDrive40 guise, is priced starting from S$391,888 with COE.

In Singapore, the car will be showcased at EV Weekend 2021 beginning tomorrow where attendees can see the car and test drive it (pre-drive signup required).

EV Weekend is Singapore’s First and Largest Electric Vehicle event, and it’s on from 3-12 December 2021 at Resorts World Sentosa! For a full rundown of the iX, the more powerful iDrive50i and announced high-performance M50 model read our story and also our spotlight on it at EV Weekend 2021.

There are four sub-variants of the car, prices include COE and VES:
The ‘standard’ iX xDrive40 – S$391,888
The iX xDrive40 Sport – S$399,888
The iX xDrive40 Launch Edition – S$404,888
The iX xDrive40 Sport Launch Edition – S$411,888

Here’s the Sport Launch Edition of the iX – see the black, angular segments of the front end and larger 22-inch wheels

As mentioned, only the xDrive40 powertrain is on sale in Singapore right now. The twin motors generate a total of 326hp and 630Nm of torque, which is good for a relatively quick 0-100km/h time of 6.1 seconds.

Homologation data for the iX iDrive40i indicate an efficiency of 25.13kWh/100km, which would mean an on-paper range of 305km from the 76.6kWh battery pack, which is less efficient than the WLTP score of 24.5kWh/100km and 312km. That might sound like a performance drop-off, but keep in mind a range of at least 300km is par for the course here even with a Tesla.

But we think the car could go further than that : BMW’s fifth-gen electric drive tech has proven to be very efficient in the iX3, which peforms better than its on-paper homologation figures in Singapore.

Variants and differences

Here’s the ‘non-Sport’ version with less black on the front end

As mentioned in our international debut story, the iX is a large SUV, around the same size as the BMW X5 large SUV, making it one of the biggest EVs on sale here to date.

The Sport model simply adds on the aggro to the exterior – you can see that in the blacked-out, pointy sections on the front end, plus larger 22-inch wheels with a different design.

Sport version of the car bears a more aggressive front end design

The Launch Edition stacks on extra equipment: This includes a dark headliner for the ceiling, the more upscale interior ‘Design Suite’ which includes olive-tanned leather, while the non-Launch Edition has Sensatec synthetic leather. There’s also the BMW i signature seatbelts in blue, and the dramatic panoramic sun roof ‘Sky Lounge’ with electrochromic dimming.

Blue seatbelts and electrochromic sunroof mark out the Launch Edition

However the iX is a very well-specced car across all variants, as behoving BMW’s flagship EV.

You can see the car’s unique construction when you open the doors, in the sills: Like the i3 and i8 it uses carbonfibre in its construction to delete weight and add strength. The car’s headlights are full LEDs (claimed to be the slimmest of any BMW to date), there’s also the ‘handle-less’ recessed door openers.

The iX marks a dramatic upshift for BMW in its approach electric motoring

Inside is the dramatic new interior approach with crystal furniture (never thought we’d type that) in the iDrive dial, volume control, and seat adjustment controls. Four-zone climate control is standard.

The huge screen layout is unmissable, a 14.9-inch main infotainment touchscreen paired with a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster under the same pane of glass. Powering the latter is BMW’s latest in-car infotainment system – OS 8 – makes its debut on the iX. Telling you exactly what OS 8 can do takes a whole story unto itself, but this is really just the beginning and we’ll have more to report when we actually go hands on with the car.

A BMW Wallbox Plus is included with the purchase of the car and (depending on your home’s power supply) can charge at a maximum rate of 11kW, which should give you a full charge in around eight hours or less.

The iX xDrive40 is capable of a DC fast charge rate of 150kW, which brings you from 10 to 80 percent in 31 minutes. BMW Singapore also offers a free public charging subscription with Shell Recharge, 10,000kWh worth (approximately 141 full charges of the iX) which lasts for three years. As with the i3, iX owners have access to Greenlots’ charging network as well.

Carbon fibre door sills are almost a BMW i hallmark now

Given this is also an eco-flagship, what you don’t see is also just as important. BMW has gone to great lengths to ensure the green-ness of the car : Non-toxic leather tanning process, no rare earths in the electric motors. There’s also significant use of recycled materials everywhere in both plastic and metals, while the Leipzig facility the iX is built at is also powered by renewable energy. If anything, BMW has expanded this aspect of its i cars since the i3.

This isn’t just another electric SUV, since the iX is BMW i’s (the electrified sub-brand of BMW) new flagship for the electric age which means there are high expectations for this SUV. If what you see interests you, head on down to EV Weekend at RWS where the iX is on display, along with nine other EVs from four other brands, until December 12, 2021.
